Rugs are not small carpets

Wall-to-wall carpet is built to be durable and uniform. Area rugs are not — they vary enormously in fiber, dye stability, backing and construction. A machine-made synthetic rug and a hand-knotted wool Persian can sit in the same room and need completely different treatment.

That's why every rug starts with an assessment: what it's made of, how it's built, how stable the dyes are, and what condition it's in. The cleaning method follows from that — never the other way around.

Synthetic and everyday rugs

Machine-made synthetic rugs — polypropylene, nylon, polyester — are the workhorses of busy homes and generally tolerate a thorough clean very well. Ground-in soil, food spills and everyday traffic respond predictably, and drying is usually quick.

Wool, Oriental and Persian rugs

Natural-fiber and hand-made rugs deserve restraint. Wool holds a great deal of soil before it looks dirty, which is why these rugs often surprise their owners. We clean them with controlled moisture, fiber-appropriate solutions and careful, even drying — protecting the dyes, the pile and the foundation of the weave.

Pet accidents on rugs

Rugs over hard flooring take the worst of pet accidents — urine passes through the rug and sits against the backing. Treatment targets both the fibers and the backing, with the same honest-expectations approach we bring to carpet: what's removable, what's improvable, and what's permanent.
