When a dog or cat urinates on carpet, the liquid doesn't stay where you see it. It wicks outward and downward — through the fibers, into the backing, and in heavier accidents into the padding beneath. As it dries, uric acid forms crystals that bond at that depth.

Those crystals are the engine of the problem. They're not water-soluble, they don't respond to ordinary detergents, and they reactivate with moisture — including plain humidity. That's why an odor can seem 'gone' for weeks and then return on the first warm, damp day.
