Moving

The move-out carpet cleaning checklist

A calm final pass helps renters, landlords and property managers see what needs attention before keys change hands.

01Start with the lease and walkthrough date

Check the cleaning language in the lease and confirm the final walkthrough or key-return deadline. Requirements vary, so use the document in front of you rather than assuming professional cleaning alone satisfies every condition.

Plan backward from that date. Carpet needs ventilation and drying time, and an empty room is easier to inspect than one filled with boxes.

02Clear and inspect every carpeted room

Remove small furniture, boxes, cords and floor-level belongings. Vacuum slowly, including edges and closets, then mark visible spills, pet areas, traffic lanes and any spots hidden beneath furniture.

Photograph the room before treatment if condition records matter. Point out every known stain or odor when requesting a quote so expectations and scope are clear.

03Do not over-treat stains

Repeated scrubbing can spread a stain, distort carpet pile or push residue deeper. Blot fresh spills and avoid layering multiple household products. Tell the cleaner what was used; that history can affect the next treatment choice.

04Coordinate access and drying

Confirm parking, gate instructions, building access, elevator rules and the person responsible for entry. Keep children, pets and moving traffic away while the carpet dries, and use ventilation where practical.

05Finish with a documented walkthrough

Once dry, inspect in good light and save final photos with any invoice or service record. Remember that permanent wear, sun fading and old discoloration are different from removable soil. A clean carpet can still show age.

Common questions

After the rooms are mostly empty is usually easiest. It gives the cleaner access to traffic lanes and previously covered areas, and prevents boxes from being placed on damp carpet.
